Classification: Ordinary Chondrite L5
Explainer: This means that the sample is from an asteroid parent body. It represents early Solar System material which includes chondrules (small round melt droplets). It is from a very common type of chondrule-bearing meteorite called the ordinary chondrite class. This particular type is an ‘L’ type – meaning it has low concentrations of iron (i.e. iron metal). The meteorite is also a type 5 sample – which means that it has been moderately metamorphosed (heated and/or held under high pressure). History: The meteorite was recovered as part of the Lost Meteorites of Antarctica project, which was funded in the UK by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Antarctic Survey and the University of Manchester. These samples were collected as part of the project’s second field season in austral summer December 2019 – January 2020 by a six person field party consisting of Katherine Joy, Geoffrey Evatt, Romain Tartèse, Wouter Van Verre, Taff Raymond and Rob Taylor. Found on blue ice surface in suncup, snow surrounding at Outer Recovery 3 (west) Icefields. Altitude 1417 m.
Physical characteristics: Mass: 10.714 g. Pieces: 1. Dimensions: 1.5 × 1.5 × 1 cm. An irregular, part stone with 15% black fusion crust and grey interior, with rust patches.
Petrography: Abundant well-defined chondrules (up to 0.8 mm in diameter) and coarse-grained matrix. Metal and sulfide grains distributed throughout (up to 0.6 mm). Plagioclase grains up to 0.3 mm.
Mineral compositions and geochemistry: All analyses by EPMA. Olivine Fa23.8±0.3 (N=8). Pyroxene Fs19.7±0.7Wo0.5±0.2 (N=8). Plagioclase An9.8±9.0Ab84.3±6.6Or5.9±4.6 (N=3).
Specimens: 10.68 g type specimen (main mass) held at the NHM London.
